Abstract
Introduction: The forest has in the last 50 years undergone major work related changes, where the heavy manual forest work has been replaced by forest machines. The work in forestry involves exposures like prolonged sitting, repetitive work, hand and whole-body vibration, noise, and long periods of time working alone. There are few built-in occupational health companies in the forest sector, although it occurs in some of the largest forestry companies, but most forestry companies buy the service externally.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to find out which agreements forest logging companies have with occupational health companies in terms of the silviculture part of the business.
Method: A semi-structured telephone interview study was conducted with the positions that had a central role in shaping the agreements with the occupational health companies of the largest forest companies in Sweden and a total of five telephone interviews were conducted.
Results: Two forest companies have integrated occupational health service, the other three have external occupational health services. Those companies who have external occupational health services have subscriptions or call-off contracts with the occupational health services. Contracts are made in the forest logging companies’ regions/districts. Geographical accessibility is of great importance in the procurement and signing of the agreement with the company health, in areas such prices, content and expertise. Forest companies use occupational health services primarily for rehabilitation and prevention. The preventive services consist largely of health profile investigations. Forest companies perceive themselves as having sufficient knowledge of the industry to be able to sign contracts with occupational health services to meet business needs.
Conclusions: Forestry companies' needs and occupational health care availability in every region is of importance when signing contracts with the occupational health services. Looking at satisfaction among forest companies and that occupational health services can meet the needs of the forestry companies, those signs have agreement with occupational sufficient industry knowledge. However, it could be discussed further if the needs that the forest companies express are enough as preventive measures. More interviews must be made out in each region/district in order to draw conclusions about how the agreements with the occupational health service are made. In order to draw conclusions for the whole forest industry must all forest owners be taken into account and not just the 39% that forest companies concern.
