Results: The study shows that the need of support to families is changing over time when the dementia disease progresses. Four themes have been identified.
1) Support in order to decrease their own illness.
2) Support to understand and manage the disease in the role as a relative.
3) Support to prevent isolation.
4) Need for good communication with the care team.
Conclusion: The study shows that there is a discrepancy between relatives' perceived needs and the National Board of Health and Welfare guidance as the basis for the performance of kin support.
