Abstract
Background: Hospital-aquired infections (HAI) are one of the most common complications suffered by patients treated in a hospital or other health care facilities. The immune defence in small children is not fully evolved, wich makes them more vulnerable to HAI. By following the routines for basic hygiene the caregivers may prevent contact transmission and the spread of HAI. These routines are to be followed in every contact with patients in the healthcare. Aim: The purpose of the study was to examine how the routines for basic hygiene are followed in healthcare for children. Method: A descriptive, non-experimental observational study with a prospective view. The caregivers at a child welfare center, the school health services and the pediatric health care were observed, focusing on the compliance to the routines for basic hygiene. Result: The total compliance to the routines for basic hygiene at the child welfare center was 64%. The corresponding number in the school health services was 40%, and the compliance in the pediatric health care was 69%. The deficiencies are visible especially in the compliance to hand hygiene and the usage of protective gloves and plastic aprons. Summary: HAI are one of the most common complications suffered by patients, but they could easily be prevented by an enhaced compliance to the routines for basic hygiene. The author made an observational study in health care for children, that showed great potential for improvement.
